Is AI/ChatGPT dangerous to humanity?
Personally, I never imagined that I would be writing about whether AI or ChatGPT is dangerous to humanity. As someone who works in AI development, I do not intend to scare anyone.
Personally, I never imagined that I would be writing about whether AI or ChatGPT is dangerous to humanity. As someone who works in AI development, I do not intend to scare anyone. In fact, I even use ChatGPT myself and find it to be a helpful tool.
While I acknowledge that there are potential risks associated with AI, I firmly believe that it can also have many positive applications. One such project that I am currently working on is using AI for lung cancer diagnosis. Although there is a possibility of the technology misleading doctors in cancer diagnosis, we are confident that the benefits of this project will far outweigh any potential risks.
Ultimately, I believe that the impact of AI on humanity will depend on how we choose to use it. With proper investment in AI safety and control, we can minimize risks and maximize the benefits that this technology can offer.
However, it’s important to acknowledge the potential dangers of AI, despite its many benefits, and prepare for the future. I’m not the only one who has expressed concern about this issue, and I would like to mention the prominent researchers in the field, Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio, who are often referred to as the godfathers of deep learning. If you’re unfamiliar with them, you can easily look up their biographies online.
Geoffrey Hinton quit Google to be free to raise awareness about the dangers of AI. He was an optimist until now, he didn’t even think that this would ever happen.
According to his statements to the BBC, the individual expressed concern regarding the potential risks associated with AI chatbots, indicating that some of these dangers were quite alarming.
“Right now, they’re not more intelligent than us, as far as I can tell. But I think they soon may be.”
He also said: “And given the rate of progress, we expect things to get better quite fast. So we need to worry about that.”
The jobs of 300 million people could be affected by AI soon. Of course, there will certainly be (already are) new positions that will open up because of AI.
Geoffrey Hinton also said: “There’s an enormous upside from this technology, but it’s essential that the world invests heavily and urgently in AI safety and control.”
In March, there was an open letter about the need for an AI moratorium, i.e. AI developments should be frozen for a while. This was also signed by the previously mentioned Yoshua Bengio and Elon Musk. My opinion is that it is impossible to freeze AI developments since it is impossible to track who is complying with the convention and who is not. And if someone doesn’t comply (or doesn’t agree), it costs them a competitive advantage.
What is the danger of AI? I have already mentioned its danger to workplaces. Another potential danger is that with a certain level of intelligence, it is already able to independently write code and deploy it. And with this, a superintelligence may be born into the world soon. This requires AGI (artificial general intelligence). But it may be closer than we think.
But we can be more optimistic: Technology has brought many positives to humanity along with the negatives. For example, healthier, longer life and more comfortable living. If mankind can keep up with this crazy pace and the acceleration of progress, humanity might even come out of this positively. Obviously, it's not a black-and-white topic. What do you think?
